The 2007 Clos du Truffiers is a wine that makes my eyes roll back in my head. Incredibly perfumed and exotic, with layers of truffle, spice-box, beef broth, currants and herbs, this beauty is as sexy as they get, with full-bodied richness, a heavenly, seductive texture and blockbuster length. There’s not even a hint of evolution here, and it will cruise for another 10-15 years. Having said that, there’s no need to hold off either. Count yourself lucky if you have a few of these in the cellar.

The 2007 Château de la Négly Coteaux du Languedoc Clos des Truffiers, a 100% old vine Syrah blend that comes from a hilltop vineyard in Saint Pargoire, is off the charts in terms of richness and depth. Possessing a deep, inky purple color, it delivers thrilling aromas of blackberry liqueur, charred meats, chocolate, olive, beef blood, and salty minerality that literally soar from the glass. Picking up additional meatiness, graphite, and ripe herb characteristics with air, this is - despite the overall intensity - brilliantly complex and nuanced. Full-bodied and seamless on the palate, with a decadent richness that never comes across as heavy, impeccable balance, and serious concentration and length, this prodigious Syrah needs a substantial decant if drinking anytime soon, and should have upwards of two decades of overall longevity.
