One of the greatest Syrah I've ever tasted from the South of France, the 2001 Clos des Truffiers is utterly compelling, and pure perfection in a glass. Still inky-colored to the rim, with incredibly fresh notes of blackberry, currants, violets, white truffle and bloody meat, this awesome, full-bodied, perfectly balanced beauty hits the palate with a thick, decadent texture, no hard edges and incredible purity of fruit. Opening up in the glass, it delivers both incredible complexity as well as tons of hedonistic pleasure. It's certainly at full maturity, but it will continue to evolve for another 10-15 years. Don't let that stop you though, and don't miss a chance to crack a bottle of this if you have one!

(from vines planted in 1968) Saturated ruby. Flamboyantly ripe, heavily oaky aromas of framboise, bacon fat, clove, cinnamon stick and eucalyptus, with a suggestion of honeysuckle. With extended aeration, this showed much more primary notes of crystallized black fruits, violet, bitter chocolate and rose petal. Superconcentrated, tactile and sweet, with compelling sappy density. Initially dominated by oaky bourbon and game, but with time in the recorked bottled the palate was refreshed by emerging black fruit flavors complicated by peppercorn and nutmeg. The finish is oaky but also vibrant, minerally and very long. Give this wine at least a few hours in a decanter if you want to try it anytime soon. This super-cuvee gets a new oak fermenter for each new vintage.
