Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Corton Grand Cru Clos du Roi from Domaine de Montille shows excessive reduction on the nose that denudes the aromatics of freshness and precision. The palate is chewy, rather blocky and shows dryness on the finish, missing the composure of the Corton Clos du Roi from Domaine de la Vougeraie tasted alongside. This is a bit "under-par" - I've encountered better recent vintages.

Moderately saturated medum red. Aromas of red cherry, plum and iron, complicated by smoky soil tones. Fat, sweet and large-scaled but kept fresh by saline minerality. Captivating flavors of red fruits, smoke and dried flowers carry through a broad, long, ethereal finish.

Good bright red. Spicy red cherry and sexy soil tones on the nose. Penetrating, stylish wine with terrific vinosity to its red fruit and crushed stone flavors. Finishes with lovely length and slowly mounting complexity. This will need several years of bottle aging to blossom in bottle.

The 2012 Corton Clos du Roi is a model of delicacy and finesse. Dark raspberries, wild flowers and savory herbs all meld together gracefully in a wine that is all about transparency, nuance and detail. Texture and a total sense of polish are some of the signatures that are impossible to miss. Dried herbs, crushed flowers and anise are all woven together nicely through to the finish.
