The 2008 Vosne-Romanée Les Beaumonts 1er Cru has a very earthy, slightly musty nose, with touches of field mushrooms and damp moss. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins. It is not the most complex Les Beaumonts, but it is balanced with some attenuation on the finish. It just needs a bit more substance and more flesh around the bones. Tasted at Stannery Wines' producer tasting in London.

The 2008 Vosne-Romanee Les Beaux Monts flows with dark cherries, flowers and sweet spices. This shows a touch more freshness and verve than the Murgers. It is an attractive wine to drink now and over the next few years. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2018. I tasted the following wines with Charles Van Canneyt, Alain Hudelot’s grandson. Van Canneyt showed me a few 2008s before moving into the 2009s. The estate did some chaptalization in 2008. Based on the selection of wines I tasted, that may have robbed some of the 2008s of their vintage character. Vintage 2009 seems to have played more to the estate’s strengths. The estate used 50% new oak for the Grand Crus and 30% for the 1ers. Importer: Atherton Imports, Menlo Park, CA; tel. (650) 328-6639

Bright medium red. Raspberry, flowers and spices on the nose, enlivened by a piquant hint of orange peel. Then pretty and penetrating, with sharply delineated flavors of red fruits, flowers, spices and minerals. High-pitched, pure and long, finishing with firm tannic support. Lovely wine.

Very pale ruby. Pale rim. Light, fresh, completely unforced nose. Lots of fruit and zap. Quite delicate. Dry finish. True and pure though a relative lightweight. Very true to the vintage! (JR)
