The biggest, richest 2009 of the three is undoubtedly the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Hautes Brusquières Cuvee Spéciale. The first words I wrote in my notes were “Rock Star,” and this awesome 2009 is overflowing with notions of black currants, licorice, roasted herbs and garrigue. Thick, rich, chewy and unctuous, it’s similar to the Vieilles Vignes, yet has another level of fat and texture.

(60% grenache, 39% syrah and 1% counoise): Vivid purple. Cherry and dark berries on the highly fragrant nose. Suave and expansive, with impressive depth to its ripe dark fruit flavors, which are braced by tangy minerality. Becomes spicier with air and finishes with impressive clarity, sappiness and length.

Showing an upfront and open profile, with classic aromas of spice cabinet, dried meats, lavender, licorice, and mainly red fruits, the 2009 Domaine de la Charbonnière Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Spéciale Les Hautes Brusquières, 60% Grenache, 39% Syrah, and 1% Counoise aged in both small and large barrels, is full-bodied, and beautifully balanced on the palate. Pure, textured, and long, this is more evolved and voluptuous than the Vieilles Vignes, but should still have over a decade of longevity.

Bright purple. An expressive, smoky bouquet evokes candied blackberry and cherry, with notes of rose oil and allspice coming up with air. Sappy, sweet dark fruit compote flavors show a refreshingly bitter quality that buffers the sweetness and adds a serious note. The persistent finish features soft tannins and lingering spiciness.
