Tasting notes
54-ha property on the banks of the Gironde estuary at St-Christoly. Owned by the Lafon family since 1903, now run by the original Lafon's granddaughter and her husband and children, Nicole Merlet-Lafon. Planted with 45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% each Malbec and Petit Verdot. Since 1996 the 'La' has been dropped from the name in the wake of legal action by Latour (!). Sweet and fruity with well ripened – even slightly dried? – fruit and lots of structure. GV (JR)

A sleeper of the vintage, this consistently over-achieving Medoc has a character unlike a low-level Pauillac. Black currants galore intermixed with some crushed rock, licorice, tobacco leaf and spice box are all present in this deep ruby/purple-colored, medium to full-bodied wine. The tannins are sweet and extra fleshy, and the wine ideal for drinking over the next decade.
45% Merlot, 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot. Ripe black fruit and a light savoury note. Firm but nicely complete in the balance of fruit and tannin/acid structure. Not a standout but very respectable and well made. (JH)
