One of the more modern-styled wines in every vintage, the Jaume family’s 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee les Origines checks in as a blend of 50% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 30% Mourvèdre, which was completely destemmed and aged 50% in concrete tanks and 50% in smaller barrels. Sporting a youthful ruby color as well as classic notes of graphite, black currants, licorice and smoked meats, this terrific 2006 is medium to full-bodied, nicely textured, and stays fresh and clean on the finish. While it’s drinking at full maturity today, it has at least another decade of longevity.

A stunning bottle of wine, the 2006 Domaine Grand Veneur Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Origines possesses amazingly pure levels of fruit, impeccable balance and a seamless, integrated character. On the nose this gives up copious amounts of blackberry and raspberry fruit mixed with graphite, spice box and cedar. Full bodied on the palate and just massively fruited, this has a stunning texture and a long finish where sweet, fine grained tannin comes out. While this has the structure to age, the sheer level of ripe fruit has this drinking well now.

Ruby-red. Sexy bouquet of cherry-vanilla, blackberry, cola and smoked meat. Fleshy and sweet, with lush red and dark berry compote flavors, velvety texture and slow-building tannins. As inviting as this is right now, it also has the material to reward patience.

Heady, minerals, exciting and good value. Unctuous and exciting at the same time. Some tar and lots of dried fruit. (JR)
