Better than a previous bottle, the 2004 Château Rayas Châteauneuf-du-Pape Pignan Reserve sports perfumed, fragrant aromas of framboise, kirsch, cracked green peppercorns, and garrigue on the nose. Spicy, fragrant, and complex aromatically, the wine is medium bodied on the palate, showing a smooth, silky texture, good acidity, and a clean, slightly savory finish. While this lacks a touch of depth and length on the finish, it’s a fantastic wine for drinking over the coming decade.

Score 90/100 · Drink 2007-2019, Robert Parker, Feb 2007

A real sleeper selection is the 2004 Pignan Chateauneuf du Pape. Offering the essence of kirsch liqueur, it possesses deep ruby color, beautiful purity, texture, and length. It should drink beautifully young and last for 10-12+ years. The 2005s at this renowned estate, both the Cotes du Rhones from the Fonselette estate and the Chateauneuf du Papes, are cool-climate style wines with some austerity but admirable delicacy and lightness. I didn’t think they were among the vintage’s strongest efforts, but they are certainly very much in keeping with the style of past Jacques Reynaud wines. Importer: Martine’s Wines, Novato, CA; tel.
