A winner is the 2004 Perrin et Fils Vacqueyras Les Christins Vieilles Vignes, which is 80% Grenache, 20% Syrah, and from the same 20-acre single vineyard of old vines. Very Provencal with notes of garrigue, kirsch liqueur, raspberries, licorice, and ground pepper, this is a chewy, full-bodied wine that is a knock-out and a big sleeper selection from 2004. Drink it over the next 7-8 years. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

A blockbuster wine is the 2004 Perrin Vacqueyras Les Christins Vieilles Vignes from a 20-acre single vineyard planted with old vines, 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. This is superb stuff, opulent, full-bodied, with notes of garrigue, black cherry liqueur, raspberries, licorice, and pepper. Dense, full, rich, and chewy, this is a beauty to drink over the next 7-8 years. Importer: Vineyard Brands, Birmingham, AL; tel. (205) 980-8802

Cask sample Very deep, bright crimson. Sophisticated, introvert nose then very sweet and svelte with wonderfully fine tannins and some chestnut flavours. Great texture – should age well but not at all rustic. Lots of tannins on the finish. Needs lots and lots of time to emerge from its rather impressive shell. (JR)

Medium ruby. Deep, roasted aromas of superripe plum, dark cherry, smoky garrigue and grilled meat. Almost port-like in texture, offering serious weight and palate coverage. The concentrated, jammy cherry and prune flavors carry through the rich, porty finish. Fans of surmaturite will appreciate this more than I did; I wanted more clarity and energy. But Pierre Perrin says he loves the texture.
