The 1993 Clos-de-la-Roche Grand Cru has an exquisite bouquet, very well defined with cranberry, crushed stone and undergrowth scents. Perhaps I would have liked to see more fruit. The palate shows quite a bit of stem addition. There is certainly some hardness here compared to other 1993s, so it does not translate the elegance of the vintage. But it feels long and grippy, the finish a little austere but fresh. I doubt this will improve with continued bottle age but should last another decade. Tasted at the Burgfest evening dinner.

The light to medium ruby-colored Clos de la Roche offers an earthy, mineral, and sweet berry fruit-scented nose. What follows is a wine of moderate constitution, undeniable elegance, and graceful Pinot fruit. Some hard tannin is noticeable in the finish, but it is not cause for concern. This wine should age gracefully for a decade or more, offering complex aromatics, and sweet, gamey Pinot fruit in a medium-bodied format. While Domaine Dujac's 1993s possess some of the characteristic Jacques Seysses precociousness, they also contain plenty of structure and tannin. To my surprise, Seysses feels that the 1993 vintage is "one of his greatest, even better than 1990," which he now dismisses as "over-ripe" and "atypical."
