FINE+RARE, May 2020

This is a Champagne that those in the know appreciate for its youthful style on release (this release is based on the 2013 vintage and has spent a minimum of four to five years on the lees) and its tremendous age-worthiness in bottle thanks to the harmonious blending of first-press Chardonnay and Pinot Noir fruit from exclusively Grand Cru sites. As the third largest domaine in Champagne with its impressive 288 hectares of vineyards, Taittinger has access to the best fruit in any given vintage, from the top villages of the region, including Avize and Le Mesnil for the Chardonnay and Mailly and Ambonnay for the Pinot Noir. Although based entirely on the 2013 vintage in this release (a 4/5 star vintage according to Decanter), the House refrain from labelling Prelude as a vintage Champagne to underscore the consistency of excellence that this cuvee achieves across vintages because the grapes are entirely sourced from Grand Cru vineyards. This fact guarantees the quality of the fruit in the blend. The Pinot Noir differentiates Prelude from Taittinger's 100% Chardonnay based Comtes de Champagne and adds a great depth and richness to the flavour profile. Although drinking beautifully now, especially for those who love their Champagne in a richer style with bold, toasty fruit and bright and vibrant acidity, Prelude is also ideal for laying down - its fantastic concentration, length and freshness will see it develop beautifully in bottle. Vibrant nose of green as well as baked apple, golden peaches, white flowers, toasty sweetness, and lemony chalk. Superb fine mousse and a satisfyingly tense and compact structure that opens up and becomes long and linear on the delicious finish. Drinking beautifully and will age.

Highly toasty, developing, sweet fruity and perfumy nose. Rich and velvety on the super smooth palate with perfectly integrated soft mousse. Long, concentrated and fruity. Layers and layers of toast and fruit. The high quality of the fruit is evident. One of the very finest non-vintages. Well worth keeping for a few years.

The latest release of Taittinger's NV Brut Prélude Grands Crus is very good, displaying notes of green apple, smoky pear, red berries, honeycomb, warm biscuits and marzipan. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a generous core of fruit, bright acids and a pinpoint mousse. Concentrated and vibrant, this is a very promising candidate for ageing on cork.

The NV Brut Grand Cru Prelude is equal parts Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, all from Grand Cru vineyards. This shows a compelling balance between the weight of the Pinot and the freshness of the Chardonnay in a soft, creamy style that is appealing. This is Lot L9346TA01300, disgorged October, 2009 (not indicated on label). Anticipated maturity: 2010-2015. ||Taittinger is one of Champagne’s most consistent large brands. The flagship Comtes de Champagne and Comtes de Champagne Rose, two of the finest wines in the region, sometimes fly under the radar, but they are both super-pedigreed wines with brilliant track records for developing considerable complexity in bottle. Readers who want to learn more about the estate and Comtes in particular may want to take a look at my article on www.erobertparker.com published earlier in the year. Taittinger does so many things well, but it would be great to see the estate add disgorgement dates to its labels. Wine Advocate.December, 2010
