Tasting notes
100% classic Wachau Riesling from this reputed estate, based on granite, schist and slate. Made from 35 year-old vines, grapes harvested mid-October and slow-fermented in stainless steel at 19- 20°C, then held in large oak barrels until bottling in following May. Herbal, exciting, really satisfying and deep with dill notes. Proper wine! Resonant on the finish. (JR)

The 2006 Riesling Smaragd Steinertal smells of ripe apricot, yellow plum and Szechuan pepper. Pit fruit and pepper dominate the clear, juicy, sleek palate. Subtle smokiness and peppery pungency play beautifully off of the pure, ripe fruit, for a really animated effect. The finish is rich, smoke- and pepper-tinged, and succulently satisfying. This outstanding Steinertal should be worth cellaring for 8-10 years. Encouraged by the healthy ripeness of the crop, Lucas and F. X. Pichler let a significant percentage of their wines ferment spontaneously this year. They managed to turn out a trio of wines with true Federspiel character that combine ripe flavors with interplay and elegance at 12.5% alcohol. What’s more, they were able to harvest these in the first week of October, a tribute to the outstanding vine selections and impeccable vineyard work that characterize this estate.
