With 30% of the profits from the sale of this wine donated to charity for Africa, the NV Champagne Blanc De Blancs Brut is from the base vintages of 2019 and 2018 and has the addition of about 10% Pinot Blanc. Pouring a pale yellow, it is classic and forward on opening, with aromas of shortbread, lemon curd, and poached pear. Full-bodied and rounded, it brings more intensity and ripeness through the mid-palate, with candied citrus and a rounded mousse. Long on the palate, it’s already in a very generous place and will drink well over the next 10-12 years. Drappier is an eighth-generation family house based in the Aube. Although their focus is predominantly on Pinot Noir, they continue to farm the heirloom varietals of Fromenteau, Arbanne, Petit Meslier, and Blanc Vrai. Today they own 62 hectares, of which 7 hectares are entirely farmed with horses and the rest with electric vehicles, and they have contracts with additional growers. In 2005, they began producing their own electricity, and in 2015 they became accredited as carbon neutral. They have also made advancements to reduce their footprint by producing the lighter glass bottles they use today.

A pioneer of hands-off winemaking, and the first carbon-neutral champagne house. Made from Chardonnay and a dash of rarely used Pinot Blanc. With 5% of the wine aged in barrel, and lees ageing of 36 months. Real energy here on the nose. A bit mouth-filling in texture but excellent interest and delicacy on the palate. Serious wine – an ideal aperitif? No hurry to drink this. GV (JR)

Disgorged in July 2019, the latest release of Drappier's NV Brut Blanc de Blancs exhibits aromas of crisp yellow orchard fruit, oyster shell and white flowers. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, vinous and incisive, with lovely cut, a youthfully frothy mousse and chalky grip on the finish. Still a little introverted after its recent disgorgement, this is a fine Blanc de Blancs from Drappier, a Pinot Noir specialist.

95% Chardonnay and 5% ‘Blanc Vrai’ (Pinot Blanc in Champagne). All in stainless steel. Ageing two to three years. Dosage 7 g/l. Much more inviting on the nose than the Carte d’Or. Toasty, fresh, rich and bready on the palate with fine freshness and fine mousse but more simple than many. (JH)
