The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Etienne Gonnet is another fine wine from this estate. Located in a cool, north-facing terroir, the wines from Domaine Font de Michelle always shine for their elegance more than power, and this 2006 is no exception. Kirsch, sweet black cherries, dried flower and hints of olives all emerge from this medium to full-bodied, elegant and layered effort. It has fine tannin, moderate concentration, and is ideal for drinking over the coming 4-5 years.

Jean and Mickey Gonnet use some of their 100-year-old Grenache to make this very concentrated cuvée of Châteauneuf. Not sure this would get past the brett police! Thick, sweet and polished. But I must say I prefer a bit more freshness in my reds, even in Châteauneufs. Impact rather than balance. More than a hint of cocoa. (JR)

Reddish crimson with a pale rim. Very rich and animal on the nose – almost cheesey! A bit lean on the palate – more sinewy and angular than most. From a cooler part of the appellation? Refreshing and satisfying without being too alcoholic. Wait a while though. (JR)

Opaque ruby. Exotic cherry, blackcurrant, olive and mocha aromas on the powerful nose. Deeply concentrated dark fruit liqueur flavors are enlivened by zesty minerality and firmed by youthful tannins. Shows impressive energy for so much richness, as well as excellent finishing thrust.
