Made from a blend of 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah and 15% Mourvèdre, the 2005 Châteauneuf du Pape Cuvee Etienne Gonnet comes mostly from the La Crau lieu-dit and was aged 18 months in 1-year-old barrels. Shinning for its finesse and elegance, it offers up a perfumed bouquet of sweet red and black raspberry-like fruit, dried flowers, garrigue and spice. This flows to a medium to full-bodied wine that has fine, sweet tannin, a light, graceful texture and superb overall balance. Drinking at point, it should evolve nicely for another 5-7 years.

Dark red. Suave raspberry and cherry aromas, with a hint of prune coming up with aeration. Quite dry in the mouth, with focused cherry and bitter chocolate flavors deepened by a tarry note. Finishes dry and very ripe, with a suggestion of surmaturite Fans of the superripe style may like this better than I.

65% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 20% Syrah. Lieux-dits: La Crau, Pierre Plante. 18 months in oak barrique (one year old). 20,000 bottles produced. Very dark lustrous ruby. Overripe notes. A hint of meat extract. Wine on the edge. Very ripe and vivacious. But not technically perfect. I'm marking it for enjoyment factor but there's an awful lot of very obvious alcohol in here. (JR)

Dark red. Kirsch and cassis aromas display a ripe but fresh personality, with dried flowers adding complexity. Spicy red and dark fruit flavors are complicated by licorice and bitter chocolate, and show good finishing grip. Seems fresher than the barrel sample that I tried last year, with greater precision and energy.
