Brave to show a white Châteauneuf from this vintage at such an age! Deep greenish yellow. Heady and almost oxidised! But after the rather ‘challenging’ nose there is beeswax and lots of freshness actually. I could imagine this with a rich, creamy pâté quite easily. Edgy and interesting and a wine that you probably would not find elsewhere. (JR)

Readers who love kirsch liqueur intermixed with ground pepper and almost a liqueur of herbes de Provence and earth will go bonkers over the character and concentration of the 2003 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Etienne Gonnet. This wine is so gorgeous now it is hard to believe it is actually going to age that well, but knowing this wine from the 1990 vintage, which is somewhat similar, it ages beautifully for 12-15 years. Medium red. Powerful, pungent aromas of jammy cherry, lavender and rose oil, tarragon, espresso and dates are almost overwhelming. Thick, viscous and sweet on the palate, with superripe cherry, cassis, creme de mure and mocha flavors building impressively through the long, velvety finish, which comes across today as virtually tannin-free. Dramatic, lush and very sexy.

Very strong garrigue perfume. Pretty concentrated and impressive, presumably thanks to those very old vines. The tannins are quite dry but the fruit is admirable. (JR)
