Score 81/100 · Drink 2021, Neal Martin, Sep 2022

The 1979 Léoville-Poyferré has a volatile nose with meat juices, roasted chestnut and espresso. Gamey on the palate, it just hangs together with more body than I anticipated, though there is a bitterness on the finish that is unappealing. It is simply past its best. Tasted at the vertical tasting with Didier Cuvelier in 2009.

Very sweet almost caramel nose, complex of coffee and bovril (meat extract). Raisined sweetness almost like a dry PX character. Soft and warm. Nutty length but a little bit metallic on the finish. (JH)

Medium to dark ruby with an amber edge, this wine has an open-knit, ripe, rather port-like bouquet. Soft, flabby flavors have modest appeal, but the wine is quite loosely knit and diffuse in the finish. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 5/84.
