Tasting notes
“Very bright. Chablis-like in colour – bright and clear with a light green tinge to it. Very fine bubbles gently simmering away. Lovely limey nose with a touch of fresh bread. Very clean and pure. There is some depth here and the wine has broadened out over the past six months: this is just opening up. Something vinous here. Still tight, and I still rate this. There is some muscle underneath here. Goes on, This will age and age. Very good.”

The prominent reduction this displayed for years has finally receded to the background even if it's not completely hidden on the cool and restrained nose of yeasty and nutty, even slightly toasty aromas of citrus and Granny Smith apples. There is very good intensity to the particularly well-delineated middle weight flavors that are supported by an admirably fine mousse while delivering good if not sensational length on the youthfully austere, linear, compact and notably dry finish. This has certainly improved since it was released but in spite of having had this many times, it isn't one of my favorite Dom vintages. Even so, I'm content to enjoy it anytime!
Disgorged in 2013. Dosage 5 g/l. Tasted blind. Quite a youthful greenish straw. But with some reductive evolution on the nose. Very lively palate. Just a bit short and bitter. Racy and filigree. Lots of finesse. (JR)
The 2004 Dom Pérignon is a totally different beast. It is the product of a very long and cool growing season marked by heavy summer rains in some sectors of the region and then ideal conditions through to harvest. After a brutally torrid 2003, the vines responded by setting a huge crop. In fact, 2004 remains the most abundant vintage in the history of Champagne. The best wines, though, well, they have always impressed with their laser-like cut and focus. That’s exactly what comes through in the 2004 Dom Pérignon. Tasted from magnum, the 2004 shows all the linear energy and crystalline precision of the year, but with that extra magic that comes from fermentation and longer aging in the big bottle. The 2004 has long been one of my favorite Dom Pérignons. From magnum, it is especially captivating. (AG)
