I have only met the 1970 Ausone on one occasion and was not that impressed. However, fair dues, this bottle is lovely. Quite pale in color, it is a little timid on the nose initially, unfolding with light red brambly fruit, loam and light tobacco scents, perhaps almost Burgundian in style. The palate is balanced if simple, yet refreshing and unprepossessing. Linear on the finish; this is far superior to the previous bottle encountered and deserves a higher appraisal. Tasted at 67 Pall Mall for The Complete Bordeaux Vintage Guide dinner.

The 1970 Ausone is a vintage that I had never tasted before. Though, I am more positive about this wine compares than others. Light and cedary on the nose with a touch of cigar box, it feels a little dilute but there is nothing offensive here. The palate feels cohesive with pretty light red fruit, simple and tart and then fades on the foursquare finish. Yes, it ought to be better given the reputation of the vintage, but I have tasted much worse older vintages of Ausone than this. Tasted at the Ausone vertical in London.

The 1970 Ausone is very light, with a bouquet that suggests old, faded flowers and dusty fruit. Brown at the edges, and beginning to dry out, this medium-bodied wine is the poorest of the ``Big Eight'' of Bordeaux in this excellent vintage. Very disappointing. Last tasted, 1/87.

Medium garnet. ripe raspberry nose, with hints of volatile acidity and a black truffle nuance. Rich, ripe plum and cassis flavors, though slightly short finish. perhaps three to four years past its prime. Winespectator.com
