Score 94/100 · Drink 2010-2026, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Mar 2017

One of the top St Josephs out there, the 2006 St Joseph Ste Epine comes from a cool, granite terroir just across the Rhone River from Hermitage and spent 12 months in 50% new barrels. It offers notes of tobacco leaf, black olives, saddle leather and ample granite-induced minerality, and this beauty tastes more like a serious Hermitage than a St Joseph. Nicely concentrated, full-bodied and beautifully textured, drink this serious, age-worthy 2006 anytime over the coming 10+ years.

Inky purple. Explosively perfumed, rather Burgundian scents of red and dark berries, cherry, potpourri and smoky minerals. Fresh, sappy black raspberry and candied cherry flavors stain the palate, with a kick of Asian spices adding energy. Finishes clean and brisk, with fine-grained tannins and echoing red fruit and spice qualities. This is showing more elegance than last year.

Inky ruby. Vibrant cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complicated by hot asphalt and licorice, with a sexy floral quality building in the glass. Sweeter and darker on the palate, with deep dark fruit compote flavors, supple tannins and a jolt of zesty minerals on the finish. Reveals excellent vivacity and cut. This all-granite site is just about one hectare and produces around 4,000 bottles, according to winemaker Jacques Grange.
