The 2011 Gigondas le Lieu Dit continues to show beautifully and is certainly up with the top southern Rhones from the vintage. Yields were up in 2011 and Julien commented that he dropped 40% of the crop for this cuvee. Aged in older barrels, its medium ruby color is followed by an incredibly finesse-driven, elegant and seamless red that gives up tons of raspberry, sweet kirsch, incense and caramelized cherry aromas and flavors. It's not going to be as long lived as the 2010, but it's nevertheless one thrilling drink today. It's also the first cuvee where you clearly see the change in style from a bigger, richer wine to one based more on elegance and finesse.

Deep ruby. Vibrant raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by suggestions of spicecake and candied flowers. Offers sweet red berry and bitter cherry flavors enlivened by a hint of cracked pepper. The long, chewy finish features fine-grained tannins and a sexy floral pastille quality.

Bright ruby-red. A highly perfumed nose of red berry preserves, cherry-cola, incense and woodsmoke. Sweet raspberry and cherry flavors show both depth and energy, with a late spicy nuance adding cut. The spiciness builds on the long, juicy finish, which leaves bright red fruit and cinnamon notes behind.

Pale crimson. Interesting rich herbal essence. I feel almost more in a spice shop or perfumery than in a wine shop! Very rich and ripe and attention grabbing. Cool finish. Very refreshing, persistent and exciting. (JR)
