Score 97/100 · Drink 2025-2034, Jeb Dunnuck, Jun 2025

The 2009 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes brings more density and depth, with a powerful, bigger, full-bodied style in its black fruits, melted licorice, roasted garrigue, and meaty, iron-like nuances. With beautiful overall balance, a pure, layered mouthfeel, sweet tannins, and a great finish, it's a 2009 that blossoms with time in the glass, and while it's fully mature, it has another decade of longevity and a gradual decline thereafter. Based on 85% Grenache, 5% Syrah, 5% Mourvèdre, and 5% various other varieties, it was vinified in concrete tanks and aged in 70% foudre and 30% demi-muids for 12 months. Drink: 2025-2034.

This bottle of the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee Vieilles Vignes came across as being a bit over the top for my tastes. It's big and burly, without the joyousness of the Cuvée Chaupin, focused more on dark fruit and spice, plum and cola, with a side of star anise. Full-bodied and velvety, with plenty of richness and concentration, one could make the argument that it still needs more time, or that it's in an awkward phase, but one could also make the argument that it's just overdone.

(85% grenache, with mourvedre and syrah): Deep, bright-rimmed ruby. A complex, intensely perfumed bouquet displays scents of black and blue fruits, incense and anise, with bright overlay of smoky minerality. Rich as well as vibrant, with impressive depth and energy to its blackberry and cherry compote flavors. Closes on a spicy note, with excellent clarity and resonating spiciness.
