The 2009 Châteauneuf Du Pape Vieilles Vignes from Domaine de Marcoux is a bigger wine, with darker berry fruits, menthol, sappy garrigue, minty flowers, and sandalwood all emerging from the glass. Full-bodied and mouth-filling, it has a pure, layered, and voluptuous style that still carries plenty of structure. Rich and round, it’s a gorgeous wine that I suspect will ultimately outlive the classic cuvée, although I think the quality is quite similar between the two. These are both absolutely compelling, satisfying, and beautiful wines. Based on 100% Grenache, it was vinified in concrete tanks and aged in foudre. Drink: 2025-2038.

The gorgeous 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Vieilles Vignes is in magnificent shape at age ten. It exhibits a bit of meatiness on the nose, joining those savory notes to notes of spice cake and plum. Full-bodied and amazingly plush and rich, it shows incredible complexity, adding notes of star anise and allspice to the mix on the lingering, elegant finish. It's a voluptuous beauty that should continue to drink well for another decade or so.

Opaque ruby. Highly fragrant aromas of black raspberry, cherry compote, lavender oil and Indian spices. Densely packed, focused and juicy, with intense red and dark berry flavors given spine and lift by zesty acidity. Shows serious intensity and finishes with outstanding clarity and floral persistence.
