The 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape la Fontaine Blanc continues to drink amazingly well, although I wouldn't suggest holding it much longer. It's rich and toasty, marked by scorched orange zest on the nose and backed by flavors of grilled sweet corn and pineapple. Medium to full-bodied, round in the mouth and silky in texture, it's remarkably fresh after 12+ years (of course, the provenance of this magnum, tasted at the domaine, was impeccable).

Lots of fat, richness, texture – and alcohol – on this special bottling (Cuvée Spéciale). I think the makers have a good idea of the whole wine market and have made lots of exciting winemaking decisions to ensure that the texture of this wine is as attractively satin-smooth as it is. Masses of alcohol – arguably a bit too much for many palates – but a worthy example of the appellation that pushes forward the boundaries of possibility. (JR)
