Score 90/100 · Drink 2000-2011, Jeb Dunnuck, Wine Advocate, Oct 2016

From a cool, dry year, the 1996 Chateauneuf du Pape is a lightly textured, elegant, medium-bodied effort that has pretty notes of sweet red fruits, strawberries, rose petals and cherry blossoms. At 20 years of age, it's still lively and fresh, and offers a Pinot Noir-like level of elegance and purity, and I suspect it has aged as well as it has due to its impeccable balance more so than overt concentration and richness.

Medium red. Cherry, roasted herbs, earth, licorice and an almost exotically sweet note of marzipan on the nose. Supple in the mouth, with notes of pepper and woodsmoke. Seems fresher than the '97 Vieux Télégraphe, but this is not at all dominated by its acids. Finishes with very good length, and tongue-coating but supple tannins.
