Medium red. Musky aromas of roasted fruits, chocolate, game, leather and smoke, plus a whiff of prune. Then sweet and fine-grained in the mouth, with sound framing acids keeping the wine firm. Finishes with fine tannins and very good length.

Score 85/100 · Drink 2003-2005, Pierre Rovani, Apr 2003

The ruby-colored 2001 Beaune Clos du Roi, was harvested at 12.6% natural potential alcohol, an impressive figure for a wine from this appellation in this difficult year. Notes of metal shavings and black berries can be found in both its aromatics as well as flavors. Light to medium-bodied and tight, it reveals some rusticity. Drink it over the next 2 years. Good deep red. Bright aromas of black cherry, leather and meat, with complicating notes of tobacco, iron and menthol; ripe but less obviously so than the Savigny. Then sweeter in the mouth, with deep black cherry and lightly mentholated flavors and very good vinosity. Longer, stronger finish hints at leather and fresh blood. Very interesting wine, perhaps even better than my score indicates. Aging in just 25% new oak.
