The Michel 2007 Chablis Montmains offers fresh pineapple, lemon zest, and an alkaline note in the nose, characteristics joined by bitter citrus pip and chalk on a bright but lean palate. An energetic, juicy as well as overtly mineral finish elevates this wine to a strong recommendation and suggests that it ought to be worth following for 3-4 years. For Jean-Loup Michel and his nephew Guillaume Cicqueau-Michel – who did not begin picking until September 12 – the first half of that month made the difference in terms of quality, indeed “saved the harvest.” I would not want the wines of this rather steely, at times lean (exclusively stainless-steel matured) collection to have been one whit less ripe, but the best of them are brilliantly citric and mineral. Aromas of flinty reduction suggest a rather austere wine. Supple on entry, then quite tight in the middle, with grapefruit pith and wet stone flavors dominating. A wine of modest volume.
Pale yellow. Yellow fruits, honey, stone and white pepper on the nose. Fleshy, gentle and clean, with slightly green menthol, mint and peppery components. The peppery element continues on the slightly tart back end.
