Having resided in a single new 400-liter barrel, Michel Colin's 2007 Chevalier-Montrachet is forcefully redolent of fresh grapefruit, lemon zest, kirsch distillate, and peach. Firm and blazingly bright this stains the palate while leaving an invigorating trail of zest, chalk, salt, and bitter peach kernel. It would be severe were it not for a satiny richness of texture. Even so, this concentrated, energetic wine seems to need to complete itself in bottle. I suspect it will be worth holding for a decade, but would be most interested to revisit it in 12-18 months. Bruno and Philippe Colin's father Michel continues to be the owner of three of the family's prime parcels, and the wines are vinified at the family cellars alongside those of Bruno. (like the Demoiselles, this was bottled in December of 2008) Musky stone, quinine, lemon and grapefruit on the nose. Intensely flavored and gripping, offering a tight core of mineral, crushed stone and lemon flavors. This backward, energetic wine really dusts the palate with flavor. But it needs a good five years of aging.
An aroma to savour and linger over – there's all that pure citrus freshness but also chalky minerality and a hint of spice. Then creamy oatmeal too. Powerful and concentrated but still shows finesse and sheer class. (JH)
Very reduced nose following the late malo and recent sulfuring. Fat, chewy and rich, with superripe peach and fruit syrup flavors leavened by a stony element. This plump, slightly exotic wine is backward and hard to read today.
