The 1989 Giscours has a satisfying, finely delineated bouquet with a mixture of red and black fruit, forest floor, a hint of star anise and bouquet garnis . This is actually better than I expected. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins and fresh acidity, lively and tensile, with black pepper and cedar towards the finish that has more backbone than the '85. The 1989 is holding up nicely .

One of the hottest vintages of the 1980s, and you'll find edges of soy and creme de cassis here, along with cigar box, baking spices, tobacco leaf and eucalyptus on the finish, with melted tannins. More energy than the 1988, but less charm. Tari family owners.

The 1989 Giscours is the first reassuringly fine wine made at this property since the 1983. It exhibits a black/ruby color, and a big, forceful bouquet of overripe plums and licorice. In the mouth, the wine has the tell-tale succulent character of the vintage, a chewy texture, excellent concentration, high alcohol, low acidity, and a long, opulent finish. It should prove seductive and heady to nearly everyone. Anticipated maturity: Now-2008. After some so-so efforts, it is nice to see this property rebound with two fine efforts in 1989 and 1990.
