Interesting to taste next to the 1982, as this appellation famously over-performed the rest of the Médoc in 1983. A punchy opening of liqourice root, tobacco and crushed rose petals, with a sweeter black chocolate and even butterscotch on the finish as it begins to fade. There is a little more depth through the mid palate than the 1982 but less pristine character, and earthy notes dominate after 30 minutes in the glass. Both are absolutely worth seeking out, but I would give the edge to the 1982.

Giscours was not as successful as many other Margaux chateaux in this vintage. The 1983 is medium ruby with a soft, fruity, silky texture, light tannins, and medium body. It will evolve quickly as the acidity is low, the pH high, and the wine lacking tannin and great depth. Anticipated maturity: Now. Last tasted, 11/88.
