The biggest, most unctuous and sexy of the three cuvées from this first estate, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Les Gallimardes is 90% Grenache and 10% Syrah, all from the Gallimardes lieu-dit located in the southern part of the appellation. It reveals a healthy ruby color as well as classic, Provencal notes of dried herbs, sweet black cherries, black licorice and crushed rock. Big, full-bodied, beautifully textured and mouth-filling, count me a fan. I’d happily drink this beauty anytime over the coming decade.

The 2006 Domaine Giraud Châteauneuf-du-Pape Les Gallimardes shows smoky earth, black cherry and leather notes that are wrapped around a beautiful, mineral driven core. The palate is medium to full bodied with solid structure, notable fine grained tannins, a smooth, rich texture and a long finish. I’d give this a couple years in the cellar and then drink over the following 15.

(90% grenache and 10% syrah) Deep ruby. Spicy raspberry and cherry aromas are complicated by mocha, lavender and pungent herbs. Pliant red fruit flavors are deepened by candied licorice and bitter chocolate, with dusty tannins adding shape. The surprisingly energetic finish leaves tangy mineral and bitter cherry skin notes behind. I underrated this last year.

Exceptionally dark crimson – healthy looking. Even the glass is exceptionally heavy. Still brooding and unyielding on the nose. In the leathery spectrum as though there were quite a bit of Syrah in the blend? in this. Very serious and ambitious special bottling. Well done, Giraud! 90:10 Grenache:Syrah (JR)
