The first vintage where the name was changed from Reserve to Signature, the 2006 Chateauneuf du Pape Signature shows more purity and freshness than the '03-'05 releases. Julien commented that he found the older releases rustic, and started in 2006 to use less old foudre and to focus on cleaning up the cellar with the goal of getting more purity in the wine. This 2006 has terrific depth and full-bodied richness, classic black cherry, blackberry, licorice and spice aromas and flavors and an elegant, layered texture. It's a beautiful wine to drink anytime over the coming 5-6 years.

A classic, textbook styled Châteauneuf-du-Pape, the 2006 Domaine la Barroche Signature delivers a complex array of black cherry liqueur, plum sauce, licorice, herbs de Provence, and hints of dusty minerality that flow to a medium to full-bodied, elegant palate feel. This is beautifully balanced, has solid purity of fruit, excellent length, and gains in both richness and depth as it sets in the glass. No harm in drinking now, yet I suspect it will be better in another year or two, and age gracefully for decade or more.

Chocolate, fig, prune, brambles, lots of fruit packed in to the glass, pushy tannins, tingly acidity. Dense, powerful, sophisticated. (RH)

Vivid ruby. Strikingly complex, expansive aromas of raspberry and blackberry, garrigue and brown spices. Open-knit red fruit flavors are concentrated but in no way heavy, with a bracing mineral quality adding spine. The finish is sweet, broad and very persistent. This cuvee was previously called "Reserve."
