Score 90-92/100 · Drink 2004-2008, Robert Parker, Dec 2004

Fashioned from old vine Grenache, the 2003 Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne Le Jean de Verde offers classic aromas of kirsch liqueur, licorice, and pepper. With abundant fruit, texture, body, and the vintage’s elevated alcohol, it will drink well for 3-4 years. One of the reference points for proving how good Cotes du Rhone-Villages Cairanne can be is the family estate of Daniel and Denis Alary. This is always a winning portfolio in both the qualitative and value sweepstakes, and their 2003s, a challenging vintage outside Chateauneuf du Pape, are impressive. Cask sample. Essence of the wine above in structure, although the old-vine Grenache it is made up of confers great weight of juicy fruit. Rich and neat. (JR)
