The 2009 Lady May is due later this year. It has an introverted nose at the moment with blackberry, leather, cedar and a touch of mint, all with very fine definition and unfurling with each swirl of the glass. The palate displays very fine tannins, very well integrated oak and a beautiful, pure, caressing finish that really satisfies both in terms of the senses and intellect. This is a succinctly crafted Bordeaux blend that will age with grace.

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot. The Cabernet is very obvious. Actually the wine seems less interesting than the Rhône varieties from the same address! A bit brash really with the sweet oak a bit too obviously in evidence. Very chewy. Dense. (JR)

(90% cabernet sauvignon with 10% petit verdot): Good deep red. Deep aromas of cassis, chocolate, mocha, spices and herbs. Fat, broad and sweet, with deep flavors of dark cherry, dark berries, spices and herbs. Distinctly dry, seamless and old school in style, saturating the palate with dusty tannins on the very long finish. This is May-Eliane de Lencquesaing's flagship bottling.

90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot. Winemaker: Luke Ocuinneagain, age 32. Very deeply coloured and showing some development at the rim. Vibrant cedary dark fruit on the nose and some oak sweetness. Dry, fine tannins bring elegance to the long finish. It is definitely in the South African mode of leafy Cab and still pretty youthful. Needs a couple more years to come into its own though you could happily drink it with food now. (JH)
