( 62% grenache, 20% syrah and 18% mourvedre): Deep ruby. Dark berries and cherry-vanilla on the assertively perfumed nose and palate. Shows good depth and appealing sweetness, picking up a lavender pastille nuance with air. The vanilla note repeats on the lingering finish, which is framed by smooth tannins.

A resounding success in the vintage, the 2011 Chateauneuf du Pape is a knockout blend of 62% Grenache, 20% Syrah and the balance Mourvedre. Aged 50% in foudre, 35% in barrel and the rest in concrete, it offers up stunning notes of incense, lavender, roasted meats and bouquet garni to go with full-bodied richness and depth on the palate. Loaded with character and charm, it’s hard to resist and should continue to dish out loads of pleasure for another 6-7 years. Drink now-2020. Owned by Jean-Michel Cazes (Cazes family of Bordeaux), this estate covers roughly 63 acres, mostly in the lieux-dits of Les Reves, Grand Pierre and Bois Senechaux. They produce a single red and white Chateauneuf du Pape, both of which offer fabulous fruit and intensity. Importer: Verity Wines, New York, NY; tel. (212) 683-8763

Bright purple. Exotic aromas of dark berry preserves, vanilla and incense, with a smoky overtone. Lush and appealingly sweet, offering open-knit blackberry and blueberry flavors and a touch of candied flowers. The vanilla note comes back on the sweet, supple finish. This should be a very attractive wine soon after release.
