A wine I overrated in Issue #5, and showing a more evolve, charming profile than when tasted at the domaine, the 2008 Domaine de Marcoux Châteauneuf-du-Pape is all about charm and comfort, displaying loads of sweet raspberry and kirsch characteristics with touches of garrigue, flowers, and spice on the nose, a medium to full bodied, beautifully texture palate, and good length on the finish. Upfront, perfumed, and relatively soft with regards to structure, this is perfect for drinking over the coming 5-8 years.

Ruby-red. Lively aromas and flavors of raspberry, five-spice powder, herbs and lavender. Lush on entry then tighter in the middle, showing sweet red fruit flavors and a sexy note of candied flowers. Already harmonious and complex, with very good finishing cut and lingering florality.

Only one Chateauneuf du Pape was produced in 2008. The 2008 Chateauneuf du Pape is composed of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah and represents one of the better efforts of the vintage. Its deep ruby color is followed by sweet, upfront aromas of blackberries, black currants, licorice, underbrush and loamy soil. Unlike many of its predecessors, it does not require additional bottle age, so enjoy this deep, full-bodied red over the next 7-8 years. This estate has been long run with great attention to detail and passion by the Armenier sisters, Sophie and Catherine. One of the oldest estates in Chateauneuf du Pape (records go back to the 14th century), the vineyards are biodynamically farmed at this small, 42-acre property. The Armenier sisters’ newest acquisition is the Domaine de la Lorentine in the up and coming appellation of Lirac. This wine gets better with each vintage as they get to know the vineyard. Bright ruby. Intensely perfumed aromas of red and dark berries, potpourri and garrigue are complemented by allspice and minerals. Juicy, finely etched red fruit flavors are given depth by notes of bitter chocolate and licorice. Pinot-like in weight and texture but typically Provencal in character, with very good finishing clarity and lingering spiciness. This 80/20 blend of grenache and syrah was raised completely in concrete.
