Bosquet des Papes's 1998 Chateauneuf du Pape is fully mature, and I suspect better years ago. Coffee bean, licorice, roasted herbs and some oxidative notes give way to a sweetly fruited, medium to full-bodied, slightly over-the-hill Chateauneuf. Made from 75% Grenache, 12% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre and a splash of other varieties, it spent 12-18 months in foudre and barrel prior to bottling. It has some charm, but drink up.

A textbook Châteauneuf, the 1998 Bosquet des Papes is drinking at point, showing garrigue-laced aromas of dried cherries, meat, leather, and touches of licorice on the nose. Complex, nuanced, and everything you’d expect from a mature wine, this is still clean and focused on the palate with medium body, a silky, integrated texture, and plenty of class on the finish. While no big rush, I would consume bottle over the coming 4-6 years.

Dark brick – shading and quite convincing-looking. Cheesey, mature, no freshnes on the nose. Thick and sweet and echt but lacks zip. Dusty. (JR)
