Tasting notes
This is a beautifully elegant offering. The 1998 Cabernet Sauvignon displays aromas of new oak along with classic herbaceous black currant characteristics. It possesses impressive elegance as well as intensity, medium to full body, and a youthful, evolved style. More backward than the 1997, it will be at its finest between 2003-2016. Importer: Ted Schrauth, Old Vines Australia, imported by Epic Wines, Santa Cruz, CA, tel. (831) 689-9080; Commonwealth Wines, Mansfield, MA, tel. Rich, hidden nose promising all sorts of exciting things. Thick, sweet fruit when it hits the palate followed by layers of explosive interest. There is a great deal of tannin here but it is well covered by slicks of dramatic rich Cabernet fruit (the wine contains four per cent Cabernet Franc and two per cent Petit Verdot). Quite plummy. I wondered whether this was Gralyn when I tasted it blind. (JR)
