The NV Extra-Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Pierrières (2008) was the first vintage where Collin was able to buy some new barrels, and he bottled it as a pure vintage, labelling it with lieu-dit "Les Pierrières" for the first time. Offering up aromas of sweet orchard fruit and citrus zest mingled with notions of oyster shell, white flowers and struck flint, it's medium to full-bodied, chiseled and incisive, with terrific depth at the core, racy acids and a long, electric finish. This was the wine that first alerted me, as a student, to the quality emerging from this address, and it is every bit as thrilling to revisit today. It's even better, of course, in magnum, but this review refers to the original commercial disgorgment in 750-milliliter bottles.

Magnum. The wine was initially clearly much less tense than the 2007 and on the nose it opened out to aromas slightly redolent of ginger beer. But then it tightned up to be more like the style of Ulysse Collin after a while in the glass. This was the first time he used any new oak (about 30%). (JR)

Oliver Collin's NV (2008) Extra Brut Blanc de Blancs Les Perrières leaves the room speechless. What a wine! A warm, toasty bouquet fleshes out into deep, expressive fruit in a big, large-scaled, vinous Champagne of the highest level. All the elements are very much in place in a wine that captures the best in small production, artisan Champagnes. Fermentation and aging in French oak barrels give these wines distinctly Burgundian overtones to match fruit from impeccably farmed vineyards. I think it is safe to say that, on this day, the 2008 Les Perrières stole the show.
