Score 90/100 · Drink 2014-2018, Robert Parker, Aug 2014

From Stephane Derenoncourt’s personal estate, this gorgeous 2003 has aged fabulously well, proving his talent and belief in this south-facing, hillside vineyard planted in clay and limestone soils. Yields were only 15 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend was 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. This sleeper of the vintage boasts a dark ruby/purple color, round, juicy, caramelized black currant and cherry fruit notes and hints of truffles and camphor in the background. An opulent, fleshy beauty that hit 13.8% natural alcohol, it should continue to drink well for another 3-4 years.

Extraordinary depth of colour yet life too. Some savoury notes on the nose and good energy on the palate. Far from the most concentrated wine yet there is both freshness and sweetness. Slightly dry tannins on the finish. (JR)

(a blend of 60% merlot, 25% cabernet franc and 15% cabernet sauvignon) Bright ruby-red. Superripe aromas of black fruits, bitter chocolate and violet. Smooth, sweet and very ripe but also lively. Showed increasing density and chewiness as it opened in the glass. A sweet, aromatic midweight, finishing with fine-grained tannins and lovely length. Even the merlot at this Cotes de Castillon property was harvested on September 20, and the yield in 2003 was a mere 17 hectoliters per hectare, according to owner/winemaker Stephane Derenoncourt. A very good early showing.
