Still deep ruby in color, with no amber at all, the 2007 Rasteau la Ponce is a classic Rasteau with its ripe black cherry and currant fruit, dried soil, spice and chocolate-laced aromas and flavors. With full-bodied richness, ripe, sweet tannin and a voluptuous texture, it’s drinking at point and will hold for another 3-4 years.

Another great value from this producer, the 2007 Domaine des Escaravailles Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau La Ponce is a blend of 70% Grenache and 30% Syrah that is just loaded with chocolate-dusted black cherries, licorice, and chalky notes. These carry over to the palate where the wine is medium to full bodied, beautifully textured, fresh, balanced and very long. Solid purity and with the backend structure, this should drink beautifully over the next 8 to 10 years. Well done!

Very syrupy fruit upfront, sweet and rich, hot alcohol, bit brief on the finish. (RH)

A beautiful wine, the 2007 Domaine des Escaravailles Côtes du Rhône Villages Rasteau La Ponce blanc (a blend of 40% Roussanne, 40% Marsanne and 20% old Clairette & Grenache) offers up crisp, clean aromas of pineapple, green apples, minerals and flowers. These lead into a medium to full bodied white that offers vibrant acidity, juicy fruit, plenty of edge and clarity and a grippy, long finish. While this shows lots of palate cleansing acidity, it has the fruit to back it up.
