A sexier, more upfront and open-knit style, the 2007 Coteaux du Languedoc la Porte du Ciel offers the classic iodine and seaweed characteristics that are the hallmarks of this cuvee, as well as notes of beef blood, black raspberry and olive brine. Incredibly complex aromatically, it’s full-bodied and seamless on the palate, with a ready to go, silky and weightless profile that makes it a joy to drink today. It doesn’t have as much raw material or concentration as the Clos des Truffiers, but should continue drinking beautifully over the coming 5-7 years.

Flamboyantly rich and decadent, the 2007 Château de la Négly Coteaux du Languedoc La Clape Porte du Ciel is a spectacular, 100% Syrah cuvee that’s from a single plot of vines planted between 1990 and 1993. From incredibly low yields of 10 to 15 hls/ha and aged in 100% new French oak barrels for 24-27 months, this singular Syrah offers up scents of blackberry liqueur, herbed meats, blood, pepper, saltwater brine, and roasted Provencal herbs. These rich, exotic aromatic qualities are mirrored on the palate, where the wine is full-bodied and lavishly textured, yet also perfectly balanced and surprisingly fresh and deft, with clean acidity, brilliant purity, and riveting focus and length on the finish. I followed this bottle for multiple days, and it’s blockbuster stuff anyway you look at it. I would give bottles another 2-3 years in the cellar, and it should keep for two+ decades.
