2009 Blason de L'Evangile

The finest second wine l’Evangile has ever made, the 2009 Blason de l’Evangile is primarily made from Merlot blended with about 25% Cabernet Franc. It is a wonderfully expressive, earthy Pomerol offering notes of red and black fruits, new saddle leather, roasted coffee and a touch of underbrush as well as unsmoked cigar tobacco. Already delicious, this evolved beauty should last for another decade.

Different because lots (24%) of Cabernet Franc – young vines. The first year of their new Cab Franc – a very fresh wine. They are still discussing whether to sell it en primeur. Just 1,000 cases. He thinks it’s the best Blason ever and finds it quite close to L’Évangile. Rest of what they made was sold off in bulk. Actually I find it pretty damn ripe and opulent on the nose. Then on the palate – still very rich and ripe and dramatic. Very luscious. Lots of flesh but some fresh acidity on the finish. Just a bit blurred. But very fresh. pH 3.73 (JR)

Pretty aromas of crushed blueberries, with sliced mushrooms that follow through to a full body and chewy tannins with a lovely depth of ripe fruit. Bright acidity. Superb second wine from L'Evangile. Try in 2016. James Suckling, jamessuckling.com
