Score 90/100 · Drink 2001-2007, Robert Parker, Dec 2001

In 1999, Sang des Cailloux introduced the Vacqueyras Cuvee Doucinello, a blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 7% Mourvedre, and 3% Cinsault aged completely in foudre. The dense, saturated plum/purple-colored Cuvee Doucinello offers a big, spicy bouquet of black fruits intertwined with underbrush, licorice, and truffles. Full-bodied, with ripe, glycerin-imbued black fruit, and low acidity, this rich Vacqueyras should drink well for 5-6 years. Other than the superb negociant Tardieu-Laurent (in the beautiful medieval village of Lourmarin), I cannot think of anyone else producing Vacqueyras of such richness and intensity as Sang des Cailloux. Bright red-ruby. Ripe, expressive nose combines sweet cherries, leather and meat; complex and inviting. Good ripe fruit and chewy texture; not sweet but nicely concentrated. Finishes with chewy, slightly rustic tannins. Offers good length but seems a bit tougher than the Lopy bottling.
