The NV (2021) Brut Nature Cumières, from magnum, is terrific. Powerful, resonant and so expressive, the 2021 shows so well today. Citrus peel, sage, mint and white pepper are some of the notes that build in this superb Champagne from Vincent Laval. The magnum gets an extra year in the cellar, an approach that works so well in amplifying all the qualities of Cumières. Laval bottled just a few magnums and jeroboams, but no standard bottles, as production was severely curtailed by frost. Zero dosage. Disgorged: March 2025.

The NV Champagne Premier Cru Cumières Brut Nature pours a pale straw/copper tinge and opens with brothy and attractive savory notes of toast, hints of iodine, gunflint, orange peel, and chalky earth. Medium-bodied, it's savory but not austere and also has purity. It has a frothy mousse and a mouthwatering finish with a saline note. Drink now or over the coming 15 years. Base vintage 2022. Disgorged March 13, 2025.

Disgorged in October 2024 without dosage, Laval’s latest NV Brut Nature Cumières (2022)—sourced entirely from the 2022 vintage—is a blend of fruit from various vineyard sites across Cumières. Fermented and matured in oak, it opens from the glass with aromas of early-blooming white blossoms, pear and spices. On the palate, it is medium- to full-bodied, vinous and fleshy, delivering an expansive entry and a generous core of ripe fruit. The acidity is both ripe but vibrant, while the mousse is pillowy, lending a refined texture. Beneath its ripeness lies a firm backbone of tension, culminating in a long, intensely saline finish.

Low-key nose – it's all buried underneath. Obvious green apple flavours and oak influence. More admirable than pleasurable in my book. (JR)
