Tasting notes
Medium to dark ruby/purple-colored, the 2000 Syrah boasts an awesome nose of sweet black raspberries, blackberries, and hints of leather. This serious, beautifully-detailed wine offers a medium-bodied, satin-textured, rich character packed with cassis liqueur and black raspberry flavors. Loads of ripe, supple tannin make their appearance in the persistent finish, as do notes of toasted oak. Boekenhoutskloof fashions the finest South African Syrahs I've tasted. "I want to be in the style of Hermitage, not Barossa, that's the business," stated Mark Kent matter-of-factly. An admirer of Gerard and Jean-Louis Chave, Kent ferments his Syrah with natural yeasts and ages it for 27 months in used barrels. Anticipated maturity: now-2010. Red-ruby. Northern Rhone-like aromas of raspberry, pepper, smoked meat and woodsmoke. Intensely flavored, vibrant and firm, with raspberry, smoked meat, iron, mocha and tobacco notes. Very suave, juicy syrah, finishing with fine tannins and impressive length.
