The 2011 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a pure nose, earthy at first before revealing tightly wound red fruit, hints of tobacco and Earl Grey/white flowers. Compared to the bottle tasted in 2018, I find a soupçon more greenness here. The palate is medium-bodied with striking acidity, taut and linear, with a slightly peppery finish. Enjoyable, very classic in style, though I have encountered better bottles.

The 2011 Mazoyères-Chambertin Grand Cru has a superb bouquet with ample cranberry, raspberry, orange blossom and Earl Grey scents that are succinctly combined. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, ample freshness and touches of citrus fruit enhancing the structured finish that has softened enough in recent years to become approachable. Yet there is the substance here to suggest long-term ageing. Superb. Tasted at Flint Wines Burgundy 2011 tasting.
The 2011 Mazoyeres-Chambertin Grand Cru, which is populated by 54-year-old vines with a propensity for small berries due to millerandage, has a fuller and more aromatic bouquet when compared directly against the Charmes-Chambertin 2011, perfumed with lascivious ripe strawberry and cranberry aromas suffused with cold stone. The palate is medium-bodied with supple and fine tannins. It has a pleasant build in the mouth and yet the finish is understated, classic in style and very refined. This is just a Mazoyeres that you will want to abscond with. Drink now-2022. Taupenot-Merme was my final visit of the week. I have been following these wines for a number of years, even predating my wine writing career. Winemaker Romain Taupenot and his sister Virginie run the domaine in the centre of Morey-Saint-Denis and fashion a classical style of Burgundy wine that I feel has improved in recent years. 0.86 ha. Dense crimson – unusually so for 2011. Fine and tense. Lots of sweetness and even seems a little simple next to the Charmes today, even though Romain assures me that yesterday the Charmes knocked spots off the Mazoyères! (JR)
