Ripe red and black cherries, roasted garrigue, leather, and Provençal spices all emerge from the 2009 Châteauneuf Du Pape Chante Le Merle Vieilles Vignes, a classic 2009 that's full-bodied and has a round, layered mouthfeel. This Provençal, layered, incredibly satisfying effort is drinking at point today and has another 10+ years of overall prime drinking. This old vine cuvee is largely Grenache (86%) with smaller amounts of Syrah and Mourvèdre, from a mix of the Barbe d'Asne, Brusquières, Mont Redon, and Pignan (Nord) lieux-dits. It was vinified in concrete and aged in a mix of foudre, demi-muids, and tank. Drink: 2025-2034.

This bottle of the 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape Chante le Merle Vieilles Vignes was singing at full and amazingly youthful voice this June. Black cherry fruit dominated the nose of this big, rich, tannic beast, which still has years ahead of it. Full-bodied and velvety, with a long, concentrated finish, I could see it aging through 2030.

Not destemmed. Rich, black-cherry fruit. Full but with a degree of subtlety on the palate that gives an earthy edge. Hot, warming finish. (RH)
