Score 87/100 · Drink 2018-2020, Neal Martin, Feb 2019

The 1988 Clos de Tart Grand Cru has a mature, earthenware bouquet with slight metallic notes and lacking in fruit. The palate is rather rustic with grippy but coarse tannin, and foursquare and conservative, perhaps not really expressing the terroir of the site. It is redeemed by a fine line of acidity, and more refinement and precision develop with time in the glass. Not a bad Clos de Tart, but not the best either. You would expect much more. Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London.

Lovely complex nose. Perfumed and lovely and none of the toughness of so many 1988s. Rich and complete and lovely now. (JR)

A light ruby color with an amber edge is followed by an earthy, herbaceous-scented wine with high acidity, washed-out, dusty, strawberry and cherry flavors, medium body, and an astringent, unpleasant finish.
