The 1982 Clos de Tart Grand Cru is an unexpected surprise given that this was a rainy, rot-infested vintage. It offers simple light red fruit on the nose, but somehow the aromatics gain substance with aeration, developing subtle floral scents. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannin framing the earthy, slightly ferrous fruit. It just fades on the finish, as if knowing that if it hung around any longer, something might go wrong. But in fairness, this is a decent 1982 red Burgundy that has lasted well for 36 years. Tasted at the Clos de Tart vertical at Ten Trinity in London.

An intriguing floral note on the nose soon after opening but it was all too fleeting and the wine became quite, um, tart, and uncomfortably chewy. There was not quite enough fruit in the middle. Not a success. (JR)
